The Laine used to be a slum area, but now it is a place with many vintage clothes shops, second-hand books (I bought Alice in Wonderland for 10p!), musical instrument, museums and cafés. It is definitely the best spot for people watching. I cannot say I like North Laine better than The Lanes, because both these places are so cool.
P.S.: There’s something strange about that book!
